Figured I'd post a few items, given my complete disregard of my blog over the past 2 years: my entry for a Sidequesting's Dystopia Vehicle Competition, and a few demos I've done for my the Trans Vis-Com Class I adjunct for at UC.

Also, while I'll probably split posts between the blogs, I'm trying to start a fresh, professional blog over here: http://heynedesign.blogspot.com/ - as it's the URL I put on my business cards well over a year ago.

I actually hesitated to post a comment to another designer's blog tonight for fear that he would, in turn, look at my blog, and see only Sippy Kitty and a handful of dated sketches from way back Winter Quarter. Hence, some work from Spring Quarter.

I know I said I loved L.A, but if I'm being perfectly honest here, New York makes L.A. look like a stupid little strip mall in the desert. Presently looking into the possibility of legally marrying Brooklyn. It's a stretch I know. Enjoying my time here as much as possible, as the design scene isn't exactly "up my alley". It saddens me to leave, knowing there's just not an NY career here for me.

Explaining these pieces - The first 5 pics are of what I eventually came to for my Cadillac studio. I'm not exactly thrilled with the design so much as I am thrilled with how boss those top 3 renderings look, but this is what happens when you make drastic decisions in the modeling process with less than a month to go.

The bottom 2 pieces are of an Alfa Romeo door panel I just thought was kinda hot, and sustainable BMW fashion, featured on 2 ridiculous models with no material thickness or restraint in the physical vulgarity department.

I'd write the obligatory "expect more work soon" thing down here, but I don't want to jinx it. Looking forward to seeing my Cincinnati folk September 1st - unless my attempts to become something retarded like an ice cream truck driver or a life coach work out- in which case I will be staying in New York forever.

Sippy Kitty

Above: Our manufacturing and processes class is finally something other than a joke with no punchline. Our last task was to design a simple product using the plastic processes we'd just learned - a task that resulted in this : Sippy Kitty, a low-cost canteen and water purifier for children in the third world. I'd like to say it turned out "cute" but "slightly menacing" seems more appropriate.

Nothing Productive

Loving Los Angeles - sketching my ass off at Hot Wheels. Unfortunately, can't share any of that until 2010, when those 1:64 nuggets of happiness hit WalMart shelves, and I'm forced to actually acknowledge that WalMart exists again.

Gotten hardcore into biking - and my super-nice, super-gorgeous bikini model roommate (I'm not making this stuff up) just GAVE me a $1,000 Dawes road bike in an effort to spite an ex-boyfriend who'd left it behind. Sure it's made in China, but it's a Veyron compared to the $200 Schwinn I've been flogging. Getting to the point: If I'm not working, I'm biking - unless of course it rains...

These post-apocalyptic prestige cars are the result of said meteoroligical event. Call it Death Race 3000, call it Mad Max - call it whatever. I had fun with it.

Will be posting some more work soon - hopefully. Need to redesign my Cadillac - badly.

Concept-LT: A few missing pieces

The most cliche movie poster ever - It serves as a caricature of my target market for the Cadillac project - an assassin, a transporter, and a bond villain.
The existing Cadillac logo from '99 didn't really fit my concept too well, so I developed a new one - combining existing Art & Science brand language with a lot of heritage elements, very much like the car itself.

When we eventually run out of gas - given the recent drop in petrol pricing has brought back all manner of bad habits - we will need billowy sails to pan our gas guzzlers across the scenery - Hence the sketch page. Final renderings should find their way to the blog some time next week.

These are a few sketch pages from this week. It's a new sketch technique for me, so there's clearly a lot of room for improvement, but I'm really enjoying the process. The exterior direction is starting to take on a Gears of War feel - a sort of Art Nouveau meets the post-apocalyptic future. The detail is a little extraneous at this point, but I'm trying to allude to engineering and technology underneath that's beyond our present understanding. The Cadillac project is fast becoming an entertainment design project for me, which I'm hoping will be accompanied by some sweet character and environmental design before the quarter is out.

A few re-touches of previously posted work for my descom midterm. The most dramatic change is the Dacia Sandero Transformer - he benefits from an hour of extra detail work (in place of alluded form) that I think really sells him. I'm considering leaking him to Autoblog in the form of a Transformers 2 sculpt sheet. Just kidding - my former supervisors from Hasbro would hunt me down and devour my soul.

These are the redesigns of the 3 exotics from reference, I did tuesday. I tried to play up the weird factor with the designs. And for the technique, I continued tuesday's trend in reducing the number of photoshop paths I'm using in exchange for painted details.

I'm normally pretty OCD about paths, so my renderings, to date, normally have sort of a chunky, graphical feeling. But for these renderings, I dumped that, painting in photoshop - using paths strategically. The end results are some of the best renderings I've ever done.

These represent a cross section of my sketching for the week. I love doing old sku sketch renderings - they're such a pain, but completely worth the impression that you should be drafting in some dungeon studio at GM in the late 50's, while chain smoking like it doesn't give you cancer. Plus its a nice departure from the soullessness of the digital realm. The top render represents my most current direction for my Cadillac studio - something with a little entertainment design flavor.
